THE GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS ADVENT CALENDAR - Door 4 - The Shadowy Shape of Oriel Cottages

In Faringdon, in Berkshire on Wicklesham Road stands Oriel Cottages. This isolated house is over a hundred years old, but it was in the mid 1960s that it came to prominence as the site of a curious haunting.

At that time, it was home to Mr Norman Wheeler and his wife and their four children, Colin, Betty, Joy and Rosalie. They had lived there for eighteen years without any sort of disturbance. But then in 1963, the trouble began with some strange noises and then escalated from there into rumbles, cold draughts and loud bangs. Several members of the family sighted eerie shadowy figures. Indeed during the haunting over twenty one different people who visited the house reported seeing a shadowy shape.

So troubling was the phenomena that the police were called, who duly investigated and reported that there was, and I quote - “no doubt there are strange noises… but there is nothing the police can do about it.”

By December 1963, the girls were too terrified to go upstairs and slept downstairs by the fireplace. Unable to find any earthly explanation for the noises, they called in a medium who claimed the disturbance was caused by the unquiet spirit of a previous tenant who had committed suicide there. And so, an exorcism was performed by Canon Christopher Harman and that finally ended the ghostly disturbance for good, leaving the Wheelers to enjoy some much needed peace on earth that Christmas.
