The Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in the whole of the United States. Built in the 1880s, the hotel is located along the northern border of Arkansas near the Ozark National Forest. And over the years it has been a college for girls and a hospital for cancer patients as well as a popular mountaintop resort.
And through its varied history it has picked up a fair few ghosts. For example, the ghost of a child bounces a ball in its hallways, another spectre looks for its keys outside Room 419, while a stone mason haunts Room 218. Indeed, there are legends and ghostly sightings associated with seemingly every square metre of the hotel.
One particularly haunted area is the famous Crystal Dining Room, which has a host of Victorian ghosts. Here we have reports of phantom dancers in full formal dress. A 19th century man is often seen waiting at a table by one of the windows, while a spectral bride and groom have been seen reflected in the dining room’s huge mirror. And it would seem that these Victorian spooks have a playful sense of humour.
Apparently, one year during Christmastime, when guests came down to the dining room, they discovered that the hotel's Christmas tree had been mysteriously moved to the other side of the room. Furthermore all the chairs had been moved to encircle the transported tree.
However the next morning, it was discovered that the tree was moved again. But this time, the mischievous permanent residents had moved the tree back to where it was supposed to be.
