You made an error in assigning “starship traveller” to Steve Jackson. It was, in fact the US Steve Jackson, of Steve Jackson Games fame

It was the 8th FF book Scorpion Swamp which was by the US Steve Jackson, Starship Traveller was very much by the UK Steve who wanted to expand the range from the expected fantasy settings https://fightingfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Steve_Jackson_(UK)
