I didn't know about these double bills back in the day. Mostly because my family didn't get Radio Times. For weekdays we relied on my dad bringing home the daily paper with that evening's listings in it (useless for knowing what to watch during school holidays) and on the weekends we mostly just watched whatever was on BBC1.
It was only after I got an old portable telly in my bedroom for my ZX Spectrum that I started buying the Radio and TV Times for myself, so the only season I ever saw was the very last one. And even then I managed to miss some films in it!
Oh well.
BTW Talking Pictures TV isn't the only British channel doing horror double bills now. Legend (freeview channel 41) does them in its Legend Vault slot at 9pm Sunday's. e.g. Today's is The Sorcerors and Dracula Prince of Darkness.
