THE GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS ADVENT CALENDAR - Door 17 - The Dead Man in the Dining Room

There used to be a superstition in the West of Scotland that if you wish to see who is destined to figure prominently in your life within the next year, you have only to peer through the window of the dining-room of your house at midnight on Christmas Eve. And you will see, standing behind the chair on which you usually sit, the ghostly figure of that person.

Two people from Glasgow were spending Christmas week in a quaint old hotel near Loch Fyne. And they decided to try out this old practise. And so they crept out at midnight and peered through the dining room window. But no spectral figure appeared.

But just when they were about to leave, the door of the dining-room suddenly opened and a tall man, dressed in 18th century clothes, entered, carrying a lighted candle in one hand and a pistol in the other. He sat at the table, examined the pistol and then raised it to his head and pulled the trigger. There was a loud bang, and a blinding flash. But when the room returned to view, both the man and the candle had vanished.

Badly scared, the two visitors ran back into the hotel expecting to find the other guests alarmed too. But to their surprise, however, no one was stirring, and the house was wrapped in silence.

In the morning they asked the landlord about the incident, and he revealed that the hotel had been haunted for a long time by the ghost of a gentleman who was believed to have committed suicide in the dining-room about the middle of the 18th century. The date of the tragedy was, of course, Christmas Eve…
