The Hotel Bethlehem, located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, like many hotels, is home to a number of ghosts. But one of the most notable is the shade of a young girl named Mary Yohe, who in her day was quite a celebrity. Born in 1866, Mary, or "May," had a natural talent for singing. And from a young age was performing on the stage.
Her talent gained her much attention, and her family pooled their cash to send her for operatic training in Paris. It was money well spent, for she found great success performing throughout Europe, and even performed for Queen Victoria herself. While in England, she caught the attention of a wealthy lord, who quickly married her and made her a member of the British aristocracy.
Tragically however, her success and good fortune was to last. Her marriage fell apart after the lord who had swept her off her feet went bankrupt, and she went on to marry an American soldier. However sadly this fellow robbed her of much of her remaining wealth. In her last days, she recalled her times in Hotel Bethlehem as the best of her life.
And after her death, this seems to be borne out by the fact that many visitors to the Hotel Bethlehem have seen her apparition. Some have claimed to have heard her singing, and when the vintage player piano turns itself on - as it allegedly frequently does, the hotel owners believe that’s May at work too.
However it is at Yuletide she has often been seen. It is said that a young May Yohe appears, dressed in elegant attire, and is spotted either singing at the piano or standing next to the Christmas tree.
